The artistry to produce such stunning figures is due to the creative talents of Ken Clarke. Ken spent an impressive career in the film industry as a set builder, culminating as Head of Department for such esteemed personalities such as Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas on movies such as the Indiana Jones series and Star Wars to name but a few.
After developing a fine technique to produce a stunning portfolio of body casts with an international clientele Ken desired to move on a stage and additionally offer selective works to be available in stone.
It was here that Ken teamed up with Phil Allen, a proprietor of a small business producing garden stoneware in reconstituted stone.
To recreate the delicate beauty of Ken’s work in stone was no easy task. The work had to retain its warmth, definition, visual and tactile attraction. Most contemporary figures are mass produced using liquid concrete poured into latex moulds, a process that generally lacks any definition. The methods used by the Naked Stone Company involve each individual piece being carefully prepared and finished to produce an incredible reproduction of Ken’s original work. For stoneware to generate a sensuous warmth as we have done we believe to be not only a great achievement but also a huge commendation to Ken’s abilities as an artist.
At present we have a limited portfolio including relief compositions though this will be progressed in line with our business to include further figures in both female and male forms. Additionally, all are currently available in both stone for outdoor and indoor display or plaster for indoor display.
We have also commissioned Kay Lockie, a very talented artist based in Buckinghamshire who has created two of our pieces in ceramic (‘The Three Graces’ and ‘Jenny’). These figures are ideally suited for bathroom, swimming pool or garden display.
